Within the framework of Beni-Suef University’s commitment, under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Tarek Ali, Acting President of the University, to advancing the scientific research system and promoting responsible research practices, the University’s Supreme Committee for Research Ethics reviewed, during the University Council meeting No. (262), a comprehensive plan for developing and activating the research ethics system. The plan aims to support researchers, unify procedures, and facilitate obtaining ethical approvals in accordance with approved regulations and standards.
The plan was presented by Prof. Dr. Fatma Hanafy, Chairperson of the Supreme Committee for Research Ethics, who highlighted the main areas of development and future plans for the system.
The presentation included the development and activation of the committees’ system through completing the formation of specialized committees across faculties and various disciplines, training their members, and preparing unified regulations and forms to organize review procedures and grant ethical approvals. It also included supporting researchers and facilitating procedures by establishing clear and unified pathways for applying for ethical approvals, providing guidance and assistance to researchers, and monitoring challenges they may encounter during the review process.
The plan also addressed promoting a culture of research ethics through organizing workshops, seminars, and awareness programs to enhance understanding of research ethics principles among researchers and faculty members. In addition, it focused on expanding the application of the ethical framework in the humanities and social sciences by preparing relevant forms and regulations, forming committees, training their members, and activating them in a manner appropriate to the nature of research in these fields.
The presentation also discussed mechanisms for addressing certain cases requiring the regularization of procedures, including some researchers enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine before 2020 due to the researchers’ insufficient awareness of the requirements at that time, as well as researchers in the humanities and social sciences in cases where active research ethics committees were not available when their studies were conducted.
The proposal included establishing a mechanism for Post-Conduct Ethical Clearance for cases that meet ethical requirements after review by the competent authority, along with a proposal to regularize such cases within six months in accordance with approved procedures and regulations.
The development plan reflects the University’s approach toward building an integrated institutional system for research ethics based on formation, activation, training, and follow-up. It supports researchers, protects the rights of research participants, and strengthens commitment to responsible research practices across various disciplines.
Beni-Suef University also affirms its continued efforts to develop the research ethics system in a manner that supports the quality of scientific research and reinforces a culture of integrity, responsibility, and adherence to ethical standards within the University.
