Prof. Dr. Tarek Ali, Acting President of Beni-Suef University, announced the success of a medical team from the General Surgery Department in performing a precise and advanced surgical intervention for a 32-year-old patient who was suffering from loss of domain due to a giant anterior abdominal wall hernia. The procedure was performed using preoperative Botox injections, which helped prepare the abdominal wall and enabled the surgical intervention to be successfully completed.
The procedure was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Hany Hamed Desouky, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the University Hospitals Board of Directors; Prof. Dr. Emad El-Banna, Executive Director of Beni-Suef University Hospitals; Prof. Dr. Tamer Nabil, Head of the Surgery Department at the Faculty of Medicine; and Dr. Raymond Beshara, Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine.
Prof. Dr. Tarek Ali explained that the patient was suffering from a giant anterior abdominal wall hernia, which resulted in the displacement of a large portion of the abdominal contents, including the stomach, a significant part of the intestines and colon, in addition to part of the liver (the left lobe), outside the abdominal cavity. This condition led to the contraction of the abdominal cavity and its inability to accommodate the hernia contents again.
He added that after evaluating the case and conducting the necessary medical assessments, a treatment plan was developed based on injecting the abdominal wall muscles with Botox prior to surgery. This technique helps induce temporary relaxation of the abdominal wall muscles, increasing the capacity of the abdominal cavity, facilitating the return of the hernia contents, and enabling completion of the surgical procedure.
Prof. Dr. Hany Hamed confirmed that a comparison of the patient’s condition before and after Botox injections showed an improvement in the Tanaka index, which is an indicator of abdominal domain loss, decreasing from 31% to 21%. This improvement helped prepare the patient for surgery and reduced the risks associated with returning the hernia contents to the abdominal cavity.
For his part, Prof. Dr. Emad El-Banna explained that the operation was successfully completed without the need for admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The patient was monitored in the Surgery Department and showed significant improvement during the follow-up period.
This achievement comes within the framework of the Faculty of Medicine and Beni-Suef University Hospitals’ commitment to developing the level of medical services and utilizing modern methods and technologies in managing complex cases, thereby enhancing the ability of university hospitals to provide advanced medical care to citizens.
It is worth noting that the surgery was performed by a medical team including Dr. Raymond Beshara, Assistant Professor of Surgery; Dr. Abdelrahman Hassan, Assistant Lecturer of Surgery; Dr. Khaled Baghdadi and Dr. Mahmoud Kamal, resident physicians in the General Surgery Department; in addition to Dr. Dina Fakhry, Lecturer of Anesthesiology, and her assisting team.
