The Faculty of Nursing at Beni Suef University, under the auspices of Dr. Mansour Hassan, President of the University, organized the celebration of the World Premature Baby Day, believing in the role of the Faculty of Nursing in raising awareness of health issues and in line with the state's plan for family and early childhood development and implementing the presidential initiative "New Day", which cares for premature and newborn children with a focus on the importance of the first thousand days in a child's life. This was under the supervision of Dr. Mohamed Nagi, Dean of the Faculty, and Dr. Hanan Al-Zablawy Hassan, Vice Dean of the Faculty for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs.
The celebration activities, organized in coordination with the Department of Pediatric Nursing under the supervision of Dr. Sahar Sedky, included a presentation on the premature child with the aim of raising awareness and shedding light on premature children who are exposed throughout their lives to many health problems due to their premature birth and their need for specialized care and entry into incubators, in addition to being a major cause of the high rates of deaths and complications of newborns.
It is worth noting that the celebration represents a global movement that started in Italy in 2008 to raise global awareness of this problem, as a quarter to half a million premature babies are born every year. The occasion was celebrated for the first time internationally in 2011. In Egypt, the Egyptian Society of Members of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Pediatrics began celebrating World Prematurity Day in 2018 in order to raise community awareness of issues related to maternal and child health related to premature births, as premature birth rates in Egypt range from 18% to 20% and represent 47% of neonatal deaths in addition to being one of the most important causes of disability among children in Egypt.
