Under the patronage of Dr. Tarek Ali, Acting President of Beni-Suef University, the university—represented by the Department of Geophysics at the Faculty of Earth Sciences—hosted a distinguished scientific event. This initiative reflected the university's vision of engaging with international scientific institutions and empowering its students and researchers with knowledge, expertise, and professional networking opportunities. Held in collaboration with the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) and attended by its Global President, Dr. Rocco "Rocky" Detomo, the event underscored the university's commitment to fostering international partnerships and aligning its educational and research activities with global developments and labor market needs in the fields of energy and earth sciences
The event was held under the supervision of Dr. Hamada Mohamed Mahmoud, Vice President for Education and Student Affairs; Dr. Essam Abdel Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Earth Sciences; Dr. Ahmed Abu Shareb, Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Scientific Research; and Mr. Mohamed Selim, Secretary-General of the University. It was coordinated and organized by Dr. Amr El-Sharkawy and Dr. Hatem Saad Bakri Ramadan.
The University President stated that this event marks a significant milestone in the ongoing collaboration between the Department of Geophysics at the Faculty of Earth Sciences and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG). Building upon the joint cooperation protocol between the two parties, the event opens broader avenues for interaction among students, researchers, academics, and professionals in the fields of geophysics, exploration, and energy. It also reinforces the department's growing stature and its capacity to organize international scientific events that attract high-level expertise and provide valuable scientific and professional content for young researchers and students. The university was honored to host Prof. Rocco "Rocky" Detomo Jr., Global President of the SEG, who delivered an inspiring lecture on building a career in the evolving geo-energy sector. Drawing on over forty-five years of experience in the energy industry—including thirty-three years at Shell—he emphasized the importance of combining a solid scientific foundation with technical and digital skills, continuous learning, teamwork, effective communication, and leadership.
Professor Dr. Muhammad Abdel-Ghani Mahjoub, Director of Business Development at the Chinese CNPC/BGP Company in Abu Dhabi, also participated in a lecture that addressed seismic applications in the oil and gas sector and beyond, reviewing the role of modern seismic technologies in understanding the subsurface, reducing risks, improving technical decisions, and enhancing the efficiency of energy projects.
Dr. Essam Abdel-Rahman added that the event witnessed remarkable academic engagement, with the participation of over 85 male and female students across various sessions. It resulted in Beni-Suef University—represented by the Department of Geophysics at the Faculty of Earth Sciences—taking serious steps toward establishing a student chapter of the international association on campus. This initiative aims to support the organization of seminars, workshops, and scientific competitions, and to help prepare a generation capable of keeping pace with rapid scientific and professional advancements in the fields of geophysics, earth sciences, and energy. This reflects the university's ongoing commitment to supporting substantive scientific initiatives that enrich knowledge, foster collaboration, and invest in the scientific capabilities of its students.
