Under the patronage of Dr. Tarek Ali, Acting President of Beni-Suef University, a medical team from the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Beni-Suef University Hospital successfully performed an urgent, advanced cardiac procedure to save the life of a patient in her third month of pregnancy. She was suffering from an acute clot on a mechanical mitral valve that had been implanted seven years earlier. The procedure was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Hany Hamed, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of Beni-Suef University Hospitals; Dr. Emad El-Banna, Executive Director of the hospitals; Dr. Ahmed Mohamed Fathy El-Ashqar, Head of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department; and Dr. Ahmed Hassan El-Majra, Lecturer in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
Dr. Tarek Ali emphasized that this success reflects the caliber of the qualified medical teams at Beni Suef University Hospitals, who are capable of managing critical and complex cases. He underscored the importance of continued support for the healthcare system and the provision of necessary resources to deliver outstanding medical services to the governorate's residents. The case required urgent surgical intervention after the patient failed to respond to thrombolytic therapy; her condition had severely deteriorated, accompanied by a decline in cardiac function. This presented a significant medical challenge, particularly given that the patient was three months pregnant. The challenge extended beyond saving the mother’s life to preserving the fetus and minimizing the risks associated with surgery, necessitating precise coordination among the departments of cardiothoracic surgery, anesthesiology, and intensive care.
For his part, Dr. Hany Hamed explained that the medical team successfully performed the surgery while safeguarding the lives of both the mother and the fetus; the patient was discharged from the hospital after her condition improved and stabilized, allowing her to complete her pregnancy under the necessary medical supervision.
Dr. Emad El-Banna noted that this achievement is part of Beni Suef University Hospitals' efforts to provide advanced, free medical services and to support medical departments in handling critical and complex cases, emphasizing that rapid decision-making and coordination across various specialties are key factors in the successful management of such cases.
It is worth noting that the surgical team from the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery included Dr. Mohamed Talaat (Assistant Lecturer in Cardiac Surgery), Dr. Mohamed Hussein (Assistant Lecturer in Cardiac Surgery), and Dr. Ahmed Nasser (Resident in Cardiac Surgery), alongside the anesthesia and critical care team: Dr. Hanaa Fathy (Assistant Lecturer in Anesthesia and Critical Care) and residents Dr. Iman and Dr. Shahd.
The administration of Beni Suef University Hospitals extends its sincere thanks and appreciation to the entire medical, anesthesia, and critical care teams, as well as the supporting staff. This recognition acknowledges their efforts, cooperation, and coordination throughout the various stages of managing the case—contributing to the success of the surgical intervention and the patient’s discharge in stable condition, while successfully preserving the life of her fetus.
