Phytochemistry

Course description, Phytochemistry II Phytochemistry means the study of the plant (natural chemistry). In pharmacy we emphasize on the plant chemistry. During our course we will study different groups of plant natural products with medicinal or industrial value. In the second part (Phytochemistry II) the course deals with two major classes: 1. Alkaloids: preparation methods, general chemical properties, proto alkaloids, pyridine, pepridine, quinoline, isoquinoline, indole, steroidal and terpenoid alkaloids. Many examples of medicinal and pharmaceutical importance will be studied. In some case we will emphasize on the chemistry of the natural products and in other we will look onto the mechanism of action, toxicity, contraindications and the possible drug-drug interactions. 2. Glycosides: preparation methods, general chemical properties, phenols, anthraquinones, flavonoids, cardiac glycosides, sulphur and cyanoglycosides 3. Other important medicinal secondary metabolites such as; tannins, coumarins, peptides and proteins.
