Environmental dimension in the evaluation and selection of prospective suppliers (Proposed model)

Research Abstract

The current study seeks to rationalize the process of evaluating and selecting an appropriate source of supply for organizations - in general - , and high-technology Organizations particularly through the study and analysis of traditional methods which are relied upon by previous studies in this field, and to identify the shortcomings and to work to avoid them. The study has found out the possibility of presenting a proposed model in the form of a program depending on experience. Benefiting from advanced capabilities of computers, and completing what has been reached to by the study (Robert, 1996).This model has been tested practically through the data of several hypothetical situations to see the possibility of its application in practice, and his validity has been proven. The current study suggested evaluating and selecting an appropriate source of supply organizations through four basic criteria reflecting different aspects of the efficiency of the resource, which are: the financial efficiency, the administrative efficiency, the technical efficiency and finally the environmental efficiency, then identifying the factors that measure each criterion, and the degree of availability of these factors. After that to determine two types of decisions which the user of this program can access one of them, namely: the decision to deal with the supplier or the decision to refuse to deal with him. Thus program users will be able to initially recognize the state of potential suppliers, helping to rationalize these kinds of decisions. Additionally, this model is characterized with flexibility, making it possible to modify and developed it to cope with the new global variables in the field of purchasing through development of its own knowledge bases.
