Effect of Instructional Package on Maternity Nurses’ Knowledge, Practices and Attitudes regarding Nursing Care of First Stage of Normal Labor

Research Abstract

Background: Normal labor is a significant event in a woman's life with deep happy anticipation; labor can also be a period of fear, suffering and even death. Labor are often the leading causes of maternal mortality and morbidity especially in the developing countries. Aim of the study: The current study aimed to evaluate effect of instructional package on maternity nurses' knowledge, practices and attitudes regarding nursing care of first stage of normal labor Design: A quasi-experimental design (one group pre-posttest) was used in the current study. Setting: The current study was conducted at labor unit at Beni-Suef University Hospital and Beni-Suef Specialist Hospital. Subjects: A convenience sample was utilized in the current study, which included all maternity nurses (50). Tools of data collection: Three tools were used in the current study: Tool (1): A structured interviewing questionnaire, Tool (2): Observational checklist was used to assess maternity nurses ‘practices regarding nursing care of first stage of normal labor and Tool (III): Attitude of maternity nurses regarding nursing care of first stage of normal labor. Results: The results of present study revealed that, there was highly statistically significant improvement in total nurses’ knowledge, practices and attitudes about nursing care of first stage of normal labor pre and post instructional package implementation. Moreover, there was a positive statistically significant correlation between total knowledge, total practices and total attitudes scores pre and post instructional package implementation. Conclusion: Instructional package had positive effect on nurses' knowledge, practices and attitudes of maternity nurses regarding nursing care of first stage of normal labor and these results support the research hypotheses. Recommendations: Developing periodic in-service training programs for maternity nurses to enhance their knowledge, practical skills and acquired positive attitudes toward nursing care of first stage normal labor.
