A study on an aniline degrading Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolate recovered from agricultural wastewater in Egypt.

Research Abstract

Aniline is an aromatic amine that is well known for its properties as potential mutagen and carcinogen. It is used as an intermediate of many synthetic organic compounds. In the present study, biodegradation of aniline was done using bacterial isolate. This isolate was identified according to biochemical and molecular identification by 16S rRNA sequence as Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa). Aniline was used as a sole carbon source for the growth of P. aeruginosa in concentration of 50 mg/L at 30°C under shaking conditions of 150 (RPM) at pH 7. Biodegradation of aniline was measured by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and within 10 days of incubation, 46% of the initial dose was degraded. Also the ability of this isolate to degrade aniline was confirmed by measuring the optical density (OD) of the growth of the isolate in presence of aniline as sole carbon source using the microtiter plate method at 620 nm. It was concluded from this study that the P. aeruginosa isolate used aniline as sole carbon and energy source in a time dependent manner.
