Developing standards in nursing care for nurses working in the intensive care unit

Master Abstract

Developing standards in nursing care for nurses working in the intensive care unit Abstract Thestudy aimed at developing nursing care standards for nurses working in intensive care unit at Military Medical Compound atKobry El Kobba and measuring its validity and applicability. Subjects of this study were 45 experts of jury group and 60 nurses working at intensive care and coronary care units. Two tools of data collection was used; an observation checklist and an opinionairesheet. The result of this study indicated that: the jury group opinionaire have shown that face and content validation of structure, and process standards were ascertained.The only exception was related to personnel in an intensive care unit being defined through a designed organizational structure (less than half). There was no written policy and procedures manual which include philosophy, mission statement, objectives and policies. Concerning performance appraisal, it was done confidentially via nursing manager and nursing supervisor. Intensive care units have a shortage of qualified staff. Intensive care nurses have a higher knowledge of documentation system(100%). Intensive care units have written infection control policies which applied by the nurses (100%). The areas of nursing process, with relatively higher percent of performance were assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation (more than 98.0%). Patient discharge plan was the area of lower percent of performance (24.0%). The study concluded that the proposed standards are valid and applicable to be used in the intensive care units at Military Medical Compound at Kobry El Kobba. Also, it recommended that: There should be written philosophy, mission statement, objectives and policies. The nurse administrators in critical care units should utilize the standards developed.
