Publishing of Scientific Electronic Journals in Egypt: Case Study and Future Prospects

Master Abstract

Abstract After many centuries of slow development, publishing industry witnesses a remarkable change, some describe it as a revolutionary one. From traditional printed papers to electronic products and services and from electronic journals to electronic packages sent to libraries and individuals through different networks especially the global Internet which is considered the backbone of contemporary publishing technology. This study aims to explore the definitions, kinds, international statistics of electronic journals, their resources, advantages and disadvantages, the issues related to them, steps of publishing and future perspectives in Egypt and the world at large. It aims also to analyze the developing plans for science journals in Egypt and how to transform them to electronic form in order to get maximum benefit from electronic progress. The researcher reached several important findings in this thesis. The most important of them are the serious difficulties represented by the delay of publishing with its consequences of delay of promotions as well as reaching obsolescence stage. Electronic versions may be one appropriate solution. NIDOC and Scientific Societies were supported and financed by the Egyptian Academy of Science and Technology to carry out the project successfully. The second important finding is that related to international statistics from (110) electronic journals in 1991 to (11128) in 2001. One important recommendation concerning the Egyptian electronic journals is to publish them directly into the electronic version and not to go through the traditional printed version. The second recommendation is to concentrate and direct electronic publishing towards production especially in industry and value added projects (e.g. programming). The last important recommendation concerns the curriculum of library and information science, which must include courses, related to electronic publishing and how to use the Internet efficiently.

Retrieval of Nontextual Materials on the Internet: An Analytical and Evaluation Study of Topographic Maps’ Web Directories

PHD Abstract

No Doubt that the Internet has become the most important source of Information; as it is important for student, researcher, teacher…etc.; so it is important to know how to reach what we need, but it becomes difficult to some people; as they have problems to reach; so the idea of search tools appears to know what are they, types of them, ways of retrieving textual and nontextual materials easily. The present study consists of Introduction, six chapters, and conclusion reached by the researcher, as follow: The 1st chapter describes what are nontextual materials, types, history and development, what are the available search tools to retrieve them easily, and the problems of retrieving nontextual materials. The 2nd Chapter mentions what is a topographic map as it a kind of nontextual materials, its development, types, and its bargains and colors to help in writing bibliographic data and records relating to it. The 3rd Chapter explains the different formats of topographic maps to retrieve the desired maps. The 4th and 5th chapters compare between web directories of topographic maps in International and National worlds. The 6th Chapter includes a design of Arabic web directory of General Egyptian Survey Authority. There are many results in this study and the most important are: The Ancient Egyptians were the first people who invent the nontextual materials when they use ancient Egypt writing (Hieroglyphs) in expressing emotions, chatting, and writing history. There’re many differences between ways of searching and retrieving images and audio materials, as every type has its way of searching and retrieving, which help in finding the desired material easily, and every type has its disadvantages. There are not similarities between world and Arabic sites except general components such as preliminary pages or history or tasks, but they different in ways of searching, as world search directories present ways of searching maps like click on the location, searching with name of the location and geographic coordinates…etc.
