The Effect of Hydroxychloroquine Treatment on Blood Sugar Level, Serum Lipid Profile and on The Retina in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Patients

Master Abstract

Summary The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) treatment on serum lipid profile, blood sugar level and on the retina in systemic lupus erythematosus patients. The study was embedded in an inception cohort of fifty SLE patients, which allowed adjustments for possible confounding by calendar year, duration of disease, duration of observation, severity of lupus, age, smoking status, etc.... patient selected were newly diagnosed, with the mean (SD, range) age 30 (7.07, 25, 35) years old and they started taking hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) therapy only and were followed up for six. Their total lipid profile which included total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low density lipoprotein (LDL), high density lipoprotein (HDL) and fasting blood sugar (FBG) and postprandial blood glucose levels (PPBG) were analyzed in before and after 6 months from the using of HCQ treatment. In addition, SLE patient's eyes were checked in Ophthalmology Department in Beni-Suef University teaching hospital pre and post six months of HCQ therapy using the slit lamp and indirect ophthalmoscope apparatuses.
