STAFF NURSES' COMPLIANCE WITH QUALITY NURSING CARE STANDARDS AT HEMODIALYSIS UNITS IN SELECTED HOSPITALS AT BENI-SUEF GOVERNORATE
Master Abstract
Summary:
Hemodialysis is the most common method used to treat advanced and permanent kidney failure. Although it becomes better procedures for most patients, it still a complicated therapy that requires a coordinated effort from whole health care team including nephrologists, dialysis nurse, dialysis technician, dietitian, and social worker. Nephrology nurse works collaboratively with patients with renal disease over long periods of time, and assist them to manage their health problems to reduce morbidity and improve functional status. The present study was carried out to assess nurses’ knowledge and practice about quality nursing care standards at hemodialysis units in selected hospitals at Beni-Suef governorate. To fulfill the aim of the present study a descriptive cross-sectional research design was utilized for data collection. The study was conducted at two hemodialysis units one of them at Beni-Suef University Hospital and the second unit at Beni-Suef Health Insurance Hospital. A convenient sample of 36 nurses working in the two hemodialysis units at Beni-Suef university hospital and health insurance hospital was included as a study sample.Data were collected using two tools; self administered questionnaire to assess nurses’ knowledge and an observation checklist to assess nurses’ performance. The results showed that the mean percentage compliance level with haemodialysis quality nursing care standards among the study sample was; 43.5% for performance and 56.1% for knowledge. Nurses who had more experience years perform well than who had less experienced. The study revealed that, all nurses had unsatisfactory knowledge about hemodialysis quality nursing care standards and had an unacceptable performance (low compliance). There is a strong positive correlation between nurses’ knowledge and their performance. The study recommends orienting nurses about hemodialysis quality nursing care standards and also, developing a training program for nurses working at the study setting with close supervision. Further researches in the area of hemodialysis should be encouraged. This study considered an evidence based indicator for nurses’ compliance level to hemodialysis quality nursing care standards.
