DAAD Funding Opportunities for PhD Students and Post-doctoral Candidates

The DAAD is delighted to announce the opening of various calls for the PhD students and Post-doctoral candidates to pursue their research at one of the state or state-recognised institution of higher education or non-university research institute in Germany. 

The available funding opportunities are:

Research Grants – Doctoral Programmes in Germany:

This scholarship programme offers PhD students the opportunity to realise their PhD research in Germany and to be awarded the doctoral degree from one of the German universities. The scholarship is initially awarded for a maximum of one year subject to further extensions up to 4 years depend on whether the selection committee considers the previous award period to have been successfully completed.

Research Grants - Bi-nationally Supervised Doctoral Degrees / Cotutelle:
 
In the frame of this programme PhD students have the chance to do a bi-national doctoral degree at his/her home university and at a university in Germany. Funding is provided for period between 7 to 24 months at the maximum.

There are two possible options:

Option 1. Doctorate with bi-national supervision: Grants are initially awarded for up to 12 months. Extensions depend on whether the selection committee considers the previous award period to have been successfully completed.

Option 2. Doctorate following the 'Cotutelle' procedure: Grants are initially awarded for up to 18 months; there is the possibility for an extension of the scholarship for up to 6 months.

Research Grants in Germany:

The research grant offers the opportunity to realise a research project in Germany. The programme supports research stays during a doctorate or in the early postdoc phase (up to 4 years after completing your doctorate). The duration of the scholarship for the PhD students various between  2 to 12 months; whereas the duration of the scholarship for postdocs is between 2 to 6 months. The scholarship cannot be extended.
