هشام عبدالعزيز احمد - كليه الاداب Hello, I’m Hesham AbdEl Aziz Ahmed Currently, I am a lecturer in Linguistics at the faculty of Arts. I had two BA degrees in Educationand Linguisticsand an MA degree, on ‘sports commentary’, from Cairo University. I finished my PhD in Applied Linguistics at Lancaster University in 2013. My research has been mainly applied linguistics with a particular focus on media language. More generally I’m interested in discourse analysis and pragmatics.I’m also interested in working on pronunciation.I’ve been teaching English since 1993 and I’ve been working as a university lecturer since 1999. I’ve a long experience in teaching ESP, EAP and TEFL in Egypt as well as in UK. Besides teaching at university level, I’ve also taught in institutions ranging from high schools and Egyptian ministries to commercial workplaces. In 2009, I arrived at Lancaster University, UK as a PhD student in Applied Linguistics. Two years before pursuing my PhD abroad, I applied for a fully-funded scholarship offered by the Egyptian Missions Sector and won it. I’ve lived in Lancaster for quite a few yearsduring which I’ve been associated with the university not only as a PhD student but also as a part-time tutor at the International Study Centre. Lancaster is a well-reputed university which often ranks among the UK top 10 universities. In 2012, Lancaster’s LinguisticsDepartment ranked first, getting ahead of prominent universities such as Oxford and Cambridge. The city is also wonderful as it’s close to some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK – the Lake District. My long stay in UK offered me an invaluable opportunity to acquaintwithmany aspects of the English culture, but as you might guess – given that I’m specialized in language –I’ve also spent much time observing and studying English in use. My study at Lancaster University, being a cosmopolitan society, offered me the chance to meet people from all over the world and to know about aspects of their cultures and languages. During my study at Lancaster University, I was under the supervision of Professor Paul Chilton who is a prominent figure in Linguistics. I’ve also attended classes and workshops for key scholars, such as Halliday, Ruth Wodak, Norman Fairclough, van Leuven, van Dijk, John Richardson, and Jeffery Leach. I have also participated in a number of local as well as international symposiums, conferences and summer schools at the universitiesof Lancaster, Loughborough,Cardiff, Bristol, and Manchester. For example, in 2011 I have delivered a presentation at BAAL (The British Association for Applied Linguistics) annual conference in Bristol. I have also made a number of book reviews for international journals such as the Journal of Language in Society.I do encourage all researchers, particularly junior ones, not to miss any chance to pursue their research in prominent western universities, such as Lancaster University.
